The Murky Pond and the Steady Hand: A Sermon on Interconnection and the Courage to Dive
David Stevens
This sermon uses a vivid autobiographical rescue story from a hot summer afternoon at Salem Pond in Utah to explore the profound spiritual realities of crisis, compassion, and human connection. At fifteen years old, I dove into murky, deep water to save a drowning fellow scout, Darrell Christensen, who could not swim. During the rescue, I faced a life-threatening moment when the panicked youth instinctively pinned me underwater. By utilizing counterintuitive lifeguard training—diving deeper to break the hold, securing the boy from behind, and using a calm, reassuring voice to soothe his terror—the speaker successfully brought them both back to the safety of a cheering shore.
